On 21st May HMRC announce new Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAP) increasing from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 miles.
This increase follows years of campaigning from the Community Transport Association (CTA) and other key voluntary sector organisations such as NCVO.
They argued that the long-standing mileage rate, which was set in 2011, no longer reflected the true cost of motoring citing that motoring costs (including fuel, insurance, equipment and repairs) increased by over 58% in the decade leading to 2022 when their campaigning began.
CTA highlighted that this risked leaving volunteers out of pocket and affected both recruitment and retention of volunteers.
For organisations already using HMRC rates as a benchmark, this change may mean updating policies, claim forms, and budgets. For others, it may simply serve as a reminder to review whether current reimbursement rates still feel fair and sustainable for volunteers facing ongoing cost-of-living pressures.
By reimbursing genuine out-of-pocket expenses, organisations help ensure that people are not financially disadvantaged for giving their time, while also supporting a more accessible and inclusive approach to volunteering.
