Onboarding Staff
A structured onboarding process helps new employees settle into their roles, feel supported, and understand how their work contributes to your organisation’s mission. It’s helpful to outline your approach in an induction policy.
Before the First Day
Many organisations send a welcome email containing key information such as the start date, working arrangements, and first-day logistics. New starters may also receive documents in advance, including:
- their contract of employment
- the staff handbook
- essential HR policies
Providing this information early helps reduce anxiety and ensures new staff arrive prepared.
First Day and First Week
Initial onboarding usually includes:
- introductions to colleagues and key contacts
- an overview of the organisation’s work, values, and expectations
- training on systems, processes, and any mandatory procedures
Regular check-ins with the line manager during the first days and weeks allow new employees to ask questions and access early support.
Probation and Early Development
Most organisations use a probation period to review progress and identify training or development needs. Scheduled feedback meetings throughout probation help ensure new staff feel supported and confident in their role.
