The Fundraising Regulator has published new guidance on crypto fundraising, providing charities, trustees, online fundraising platforms and third-party fundraisers with advice on how to accept and manage cryptocurrency donations in line with the Code of Fundraising Practice.
The guidance highlights the opportunities presented by crypto donations, while also emphasising the importance of robust governance, risk assessment, due diligence and clear donation acceptance policies. It encourages organisations to carefully consider whether accepting crypto aligns with their charitable purposes and values before proceeding.
Key areas covered include trustee decision-making, financial crime risks, donor due diligence, staff training, crypto infrastructure and record keeping. The guidance also recommends that charities have an appropriate policy in place before accepting any crypto donations, whether directly or through a third-party platform.
